Alice Corbin Henderson (nee Corbin; 1881-1949) was an American poet, author, magazine editor, and social activist. Much of her early writing career was based in Chicago. In 1905, Alice married William Penhallow Henderson (1877-1943), an American painter, architect, and furniture designer. Beginning in 1912, she was also the assistant editor to Harriet Monroe for Poetry Magazine. In 1916, Alice was diagnosed with tuberculosis, so she and William moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where Alice received treatment at a tuberculosis clinic run by Dr. Frank Mera (1879-1970), the husband of Edna Robinson Mera (nee Robinson; 1880-1954). Alice and William settled in Santa Fe where Alice became a lifelong advocate for the civil rights, culture, and art of Indigenous people of the American Southwest. Alice and William helped found what is now known as the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. William was the designer of the museum. Edna's mother, pictured in the photo with Edna and Alice, was Marie Tourtelot Robinson (nee Tourtelot; 1858-1933). Marie was married to John Calvin Robinson (1845-1918). Janet Lewis (1899-1998) was an American novelist, poet, and librettist. She was married to fellow poet, Yvor Winters (1900-1968). She and Yvor were noted members of literary circles of the time. Janet has written brief pencil inscriptions on the back of the photo (her signature is not present). Janet's inscription reads, "Mrs. Robinson (mother of Mrs. Frank Mera); Alice Corbin Henderson (co. ed of Poetry w/H. Monroe).". Photographic Image. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
