First Edition (first printing). Large crown 8vo. 274pp. Russet-coloured linen-grain cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with the publisher's red top edge stain. Portrait frontispiece. Contemporary former owner name and date neatly inked to the front free endpaper. A fine copy in very good non-price-clipped dust wrapper, with some tanning to the spine panel and a single small area of loss from the head of the front panel. A twenty-three page introduction precedes thirty of James' critical essays on art and artists, which were originally contributed to American newspapers and magazines, with only five of them previously reprinted. 4,000 copies were printed (1,500 of those reserved for the US edition which appeared a month later).
