A fascinating two-volume reference set about master painters and their work by James R. Hobbes. Vol. I contains the "Dictionary of Names." Vol. II contains the "Alphabetical Arrangement of Scholars and Masters, and Classifications of Subjects." Vol. I begins with an Introduction describing artists of different art movements and a list of technical art terms. Following this glossary is the "Dictionary of Names" which is arranged alphabetically by artist's last name. In this dictionary, each artist has about one paragraph of biographical text under their name which briefly describes their life and career. Vol. II further expands on the information in Vol. I by listing, under the artist's name, associated scholars, imitators, and copyists. For example, in entry for Francesco Albano, known copyists of his work are listed. Artists in this section of Vol. I are arranged alphabetically. The latter half of Vol. II comprises a list of artists' names grouped by painted subject matter or type of painting. Among these categories are "Birds," "Domestic Subjects," "Flowers," "Landscapes," Moonlight Pieces," "Portraits," and "Whimsicalities." For example, the categories "Birds" and "Moonlight Pieces" each list artists who depicted birds and moonlit settings in their paintings, respectively. One of the aims of this reference set is apparently to help art collectors identify and authenticate the paintings in their collections.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
