Hockersmith, L. D., Captain : Morgan's Escape: A Thrilling Story of War Times

4to. No place, no date, circa 1980's, 75pp, printed wraps, a very good copy, clean and bright, with scattered tiny spots of foxing noted at final few pages. From the front cover, "A true history of the raid of General Morgan and his men through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, their incarceration in the Columbus, Ohio, penitentiary, escape therefrom and tragic death of their intrepid leader." The present author, Captain of Company C, 10th Kentucky Cavalry, was one of the guard of honor at the marriage of General Morgan to Miss Ready of Murfreesboro. He followed Morgan in that noted raid into Ohio and was captured, with the greater part of the command, and taken to Johnson's Island, but later sent to Columbus, where the officers were confined. While Civil War scholars continue to debate the true facts of the escape, it was Captain Hockersmith who allegedly discovered the passageway under the prison, and who started the work of cutting through the cement floor with an old case knife. The men took turns working at night until an opening was made into the old tunnel where they made their escape. When Hockersmith died in 1915, he was the last survivor of the escape, and was only survived by fellow prisoners General Basil Duke and Ex-Governor McCreary of Kentucky. Very scarce.. Book.
