Hofer, Ernst (Compiler) : Iowa Autograph Album with Ninety-six Signatures. Circa 1881-1890

Red-brown full leather binding with beautiful gilt and white illustration on front of a bird perched on a flowering branch. Gilt decoration of plants in a vase on spine. Lightly embossed flower decoration on back. All edges gilt. Title page has gilt border and lettering. No date, circa 1881-1890. 7" x 4 1/4." Pages are clean and intact except for age toning and smudging. Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate rubbing and edge wear and some chipping to head and tail of spine. Very Good. Many of the autographs have dates and locations in Iowa. This charming album contains numerous autographs by notable Iowans, many of whom were United States politicians, as well as a small tipped-in pencil signature by cartoonist Thomas Nast ("Th. Nast"). There are ninety-six autographs in total (at least one person signed twice), most of which are signed in black ink (some are in purple ink or blue colored pencil). The penultimate leaf features a charming pencil drawing of two owls sitting on a tree branch with a sweet two-line love poem written below the drawing. Among the people who have signed this book are the controversial Iowa (and later Oregon) journalist Ernst Hofer (known for his abrasive language); state senator Martin Garber; state auditor W. [William] V. Lucas; state senator and Civil War veteran Eli Wilkin; Nathaniel Cobb Deering, who went to California during the Gold Rush and returned to Iowa with "a considerable fortune" and later served in the U.S. House of Representatives; state senator John D. Glass; state senator P. [Preston] M. Sutton; state senator John C. Chambers; deputy U.S. marshal and Iowa politician (and later Seattleite) George C. Heberling; state senator Cummings Sanborn; U.S. Treasury Agent E. M. Stedman; Iowa Assembly Speaker Reuben Noble; newspaper editor and publisher Wm. [William] Toman; journalist, state senator, and Lieutenant Governor Matt Parrott; Governor Buren R. Sherman; U.S. Senator James W. McDill; U.S. Representative, Senator, and Secretary of Agriculture James "Tama Jim" Wilson; Civil War officer and state senator Aaron Brown; state representative Joseph M. Casey; Civil War correspondent and author Franc B. Wilkie; U.S. Senator James "Jefferson Jim" Wilson; U.S. Representative and assistant attorney general William E. Fuller; state senator J. [Joseph] G. Hutchinson; Lieutenant Governor and state senator H. C. [Henry Clay] Bulis; state representative Ira L. Welch; state representative H. [Henry] A. Baker; U.S. Representative J. H. Sweeney; Frederick W. Hossfeld; Iowa First Lady Anna Larrabee; state senator Charles Beardsley; Governor Frank D. Jackson; ten-term U.S. Representative John A. T. Stephens, whose signature comes with a note reading, "Written while articles of impeachment against the Hon. John L. Brown were being read by the secretary."; senator C. E. Whiting; senator Ben McCoy; senator John Ryder; senator P. B. Wolfe; senator John W. Henderson; representative J. W. Burdick; senator E. R. Cassatt; senator W. W. Dodge; W. [William] Cody; and J. W. [John Wallace] Crawford, the "Poet Scout," adventurer, educator, and author. Crawford was one of the most popular performers of the late nineteenth century and also gained national acclaim for his daring ride of 350 miles in six days to carry dispatches to Fort Laramie for the New York Herald telling of the news of General George Crook's victory over Chief American Horse at the Battle of Slim Buttes during the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877..
