Original signature on a small beige piece of paper which is tipped in on the back of a typed letter from Malvina Hoffman's secretary, M. L. Fleming. Piece of paper on back of letter is signed by Hoffman; letter is signed by Fleming. Letter is typed in black ink on light beige stationery with Hoffman's address, "157 East 35 Street, New York," printed in black ink at the top. Signature dated October 19, 1938. Letter datelined October 24, 1938 in New York. Signature on paper: 3 3 /4" x 1 1/2." Letter: 6 1/4" x 7." Signature on paper is very clean and intact except for light age toning and minuscule rippling and glue residue from the paper being tipped in on the back of the letter. Letter is very clean and intact except for light age toning, a few almost imperceptible spots of discoloration, a few tiny wrinkles, and a horizontal fold line at center (perhaps original). A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. The signature reads, "Best regards, Malvina Hoffman, Oct 19 38." The letter is addressed to the recipient of the autograph, "Miss Kay Lawlor," who lived at "#3 Floribel Avenue, San Anselmo, California. The letter reads, "My dear Miss Lawlor: Answering your letter of October 16th, enclosed herewith is Miss Hoffman's autograph for your collection. Miss Hoffman has asked me to say that she knows Paderewski never gives an autograph and she cannot ask him to do so. She thanks you very much for your very kind letter and sends best wishes. Sincerely yours, M. L. Fleming [name signed], Secretary to Miss Hoffman." Malvina Hoffman (1885-1966) was an American sculptor. She is perhaps best-known for his bronze life-size sculptures of people. She also worked in marble and plaster and sometimes depicted famous figures such as ballet dancers Anna Pavlova and Vaslav Nijinsky, Ignacy Jan Paderewski (mentioned in the letter), John Muir, and Ivan Mestrovic. Hoffman also supported the Serbian cause during World War I and World War II and campaigned in fundraising efforts to provide aid for the country. She designed posters that rallied support for Serbia in World War I and later made relief sculptures for the American World War II Memorial in Vosges, France.. Manuscript.
