Original black-and-white engraving of Hans Holbein's study for his portrait painting, Sir Thomas More and Family. Removed from Edward Brayley's Londiniana, a compendium about the history and sights of London. No date, circa 1828-1829. 3 1/2" x 6 1/4." Print is very clean and intact except for slight age toning, a few dark spots of foxing (affects part of the printed area), and a tiny closed tear limited to the upper-right corner in the margins. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. A beautiful, small engraving featuring a black-and-white study that Hans Holbein the Younger had made for his portrait painting of the same name, Sir Thomas More and Family. "Holbein del. 1530" refers to the approximate date when Holbein made the study. Unfortunately, the original painting was destroyed, but Holbein's study is still in existence and is currently housed in Kunstmuseum Basel. This print conveys the fine detail of Holbein's original study and also includes captions that identify most, if not all, of the sitters. The sitters in the final portrait are Sir Thomas More, Elizabeth Dauncey, Cecily Heron, Anne More, Cresacre More, Sir John More, John More (1510-1547), John More (1557-1599?), Maria More, Thomas More II, and Margaret Roper. All of the sitters in final painting, except for one in the upper-right corner, were also in the study. Thomas More (1478-1535) was an English lawyer, statesman, judge, author, and philosopher. He was canonized as a saint in 1935 by Pope Pius XI for being a martyr. More, a devout Catholic, was convicted of treason and executed after refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy that would have acknowledged Henry VIII as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
