Original publisher's red cloth binding. Gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Impressed decorations on front and back covers. 4" x 6." 468 pages, complete. Fifty-one black and white plates and one hand-colored frontispiece, complete. The frontispiece shows Eve holding Cain. The plates are medical illustrations. Pages and covers are clean and intact overall. Slight splitting at the joints and head and tail of spine. Pages are foxed but text is still readable. Pages 149-150 have a small chip in the upper corner that barely affects the page numbers. Gilt lettering and decorations in the upper section are a bit faded with the lower section rubbed off from possible repeated use of the book. This is a comprehensive book that discusses a variety of topics pertaining to women's reproductive health, female anatomy, and midwifery. Pages 459-468 includes notices of Frederick Hollick's lectures and books and two illustrations of awards presented to him by women who had attended his lectures on women's reproductive health. Frederick Hollick (1818-1900) was an American physician, educator of sexual health, and author. His beliefs and practices were very controversial for their time including his public lectures on women's reproductive health. Despite backlash arising from his open presentations and discussions about reproductive health, he garnered many supporters including women who knew little or nothing about the subject. During Hollick's time, it was considered taboo to publicly discuss anything related to reproductive health, so many considered Hollick's lectures and books a progressive change.. Book.
