The concept is arrestingly and deceptively simple: Hollingsworth went around the state of California (he was based in Los Angeles at that time) to ask young people not if they were willing to pose for a photograph (which seemingly every other young person in California is asked) but to pose with their handwritten views about the American involvement in Iraq, as if they were sending one of their electronic "text-ings". Hollingsworth is not a polemicist. Indeed, no one will be satisfied with the messages that the kids thoughtfully wrote down (using a standard-size, pristine-white cardboard and black pen provided by the photographer), whether for or against the war that will undeniably define at least the first half of the 21st century. Hollingsworth has deftly combined in one image not one but three crucial visual elements: The portrait, the rally placard (in effect, the 1960's), and the electronic text message (in effect, the new century). His attempt is simply motivated: Why don't we ask what young people think? After all, they have much more vested in this war emotionally than any of us because they will have to live with its consequences much longer than any of us will? Hollingsworth has done just that, and his collection is stunning in its simplicity, moving in its power, and heartbreaking in its beauty: The kids are "speaking" to us through the messages they hold up, but they remain mute presences, a photographic message in itself of their powerlessness.
