On offer is an original 1973 manuscript book titled 'PERISCOPE PERSONALITIES 1901-1972' written by British Warrant Engineer Leslie Honeywill who was a Chief Engine Room Artificer [CERA] or a plumber as he jokingly called himself, on a number of submarines. Leslie Honeywill published many articles and books on naval subjects he was Chief Engine Room Artificer born in St John Pembroke Dock in 1899 and died in 1979. He became a leading authority on Submarine Navy subjects and after the war was consulted by High Ranking Navy officers. Periscope Personalities is a typed manuscript bound as a single volume c.1973 being a compilation of extracts from various histories which give an account of experiences, opinions and stories of submarine leaders. Leslie Honeywill published many articles and books on naval subjects he was Chief Engine Room Artificer born in St John Pembroke Dock in 1899 and died in 1979. He became a leading authority on Submarine Navy subjects and after the war was consulted by High Ranking Navy officers. The foreword in which Leslie Honeywill describes this book manuscript is as follows: 'In this compilation an attempt has been made to present some of the experiences, opinions, and others' opinions of submarine leaders, commanding officers, engineers and constructors of the Royal Navy. Over 150 names are included and 100 sources used. Many eminent submariners have been omitted, either to avoid repetitive events, or for lack of material relating to their exploits. Enough has, however, been included to provide some idea of the range of activities of our submariners from Holland-1 of 1901 to the present day' L Honeywill, July, 1973. Provenance: this came from the library of R. Honeywill and has the label inside cover. There is also a write up about Leslie Honeywill from the Wolborough Newton Abbot Parish magazine 1979.
