Collection of seven materials related to Lou Henry Hoover, First Lady of the United States and wife of President Herbert Hoover. Circa 1930-1936. Some materials have dates; others are undated. Various measurements; all are about the size of greeting cards or smaller. Each material is virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning and the occasional wrinkle or mark. Each material and the entire collection are Fine. Lou Henry Hoover (1874-1944; nee Henry) was an American philanthropist and wife of President Herbert Hoover. She served as First Lady of the United States from 1929-1933. Lou was active in many community and volunteer organizations including the Girl Scouts, for whom she served as one of its presidents. Lou was also very involved in charitable work to help the poor and was a strong advocate of women's rights. The following is a summary of the contents in this collection with each number corresponding to an item. (1) Printed Christmas card in white paper envelope, undated, 5 3/4" x 4 1/2": card is printed in red ink on white paper and has a thin gilt decorative border. The card reads, "Merry Christmas from Herbert Hoover and Herbert, Jr. and Herbert III as well as from Allan and Lou Henry and Peggy and Peggy Ann." (2) Printed Christmas card in white paper envelope, 1930-1931, 5 1/4" x 4 1/4": card printed in black ink with small gilt presidential decoration of an eagle with laurels, shield, and arrows at top. The card reads, "The President and Mrs. Hoover cordially reciprocate your holiday greetings." (3) Handwritten note in white paper envelope, c. 1936, 4 3/4" x 4": note is written in black ink on plain white paper. Although not explicitly disclosed, this note is likely addressed to Mrs. C. A. Westenberg, who was apparently one of Mrs. Hoover's teachers. The note reads, "Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hoover heartily reciprocate you friendly greetings--and hope to see you early in 1937." (4) Printed calling card of Lou Henry Hoover with a note signed by her on it in a white paper envelope, undated, 3 1/2" x 2 1/2": card has printed text and handwriting in black ink. The printed text reads, "Mrs. Herbert Hoover, Stanford University." Lou's signed note is addressed to Mrs. C. A. Westenberg and reads, "So many thanks to my dearest teacher and her daughter for such a sweet [...?]." Lou has signed her calling card as "L. H. H." (5) Printed Christmas card in black ink on white paper, 1934-1935, 9" x 7 1/4": paper folded into thirds vertically and "Printed by Del Large, Monterey, Calif." The card reads, "Hoover Greetings, Christmas 1934-New Year 1935." Placed around the greeting are illustrated silhouette portraits of members of the Hoover family members with their names printed below each portrait. The members shown are "Lou Henry," "Herbert," "Joan," "Peter," "Peggy Ann," "Allan," "Peggy" and "Herbert Jr." (6) Printed Christmas card addressed to the Westenbergs with a handwritten inscription in the hand of Lou Henry Hoover, undated, 5" x 7 1/4": card printed in black ink on white paper with tipped-in half-tone (black-and-white) illustration of a placid view of Rio de Janeiro at sunrise or sunset. The card's printed text reads, "Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hoover thank you for your Holiday greeting which they received on their return from South America." Appended to the printed text is Lou's inscription which continues immediately after "South America," "And wish all the Westenbergs a joyous year!" (7) Telegram from Lou Henry Hoover to Mrs. C. A. Westenberg, 1934, 8 1/2" x 6 1/4": printed lettering cut and pasted on Postal Telegraph stationery. Telegram received at St. George Hotel, Santa Cruz, California. Two locations listed within telegram: Stanford University and Bracken Brae Country Club in Boulder Creek, California. Lou's telegraphed message: "Won't you and Bethany stay all night with us on the twenty-ninth; we should love to have you.". Manuscript. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: No Binding
