HOPE, Ascott R. (pseudonym of Ascott Robert Hope-Moncrieff). STORIES ABOUT BOYS. Edinburgh: H. P. Nimmo, Hay, & Mitchell, [n.d., perhaps 1900- 1910]. Later printing: the dedication to W. H. G. Kingston is dated Christmas, 1870. Color frontispiece. viii, 271 pp. Octavo. Presentation binding, given by Earls Colne Grammar School (founded in 1520) to F. Favorke as second prize for general proficiency in the junior form in 1911: full maroon calf, gilt decorated spine with label, gilt edecorative frames on sides, with the school's crest gilt-stamped to center of upper board, marbled endpapers, with all edges marbled to match. Sunned at spine, and with a careful leather repair on upper board, still it is an attractive binding and in very good condition overall. Consists chiefly of stories that appeared in Boys' Magazine, Every Boy's Magazine, Merry and Wise, Kind Words, and Old Merry's Annual. The author was one of the early contributors to the Boys' Own Paper, and some of his other titles include STORIES OF SCHOOL LIFE and MY SCHOOLBOY FRIENDS, making his work the perfect choice for a school prize.
