Promotional political flyer supporting the election of Horace Davis as mayor of San Francisco. Horace Davis (1831-1916) was a United States Representative from California. He ran for mayor in 1899. This flyer commends Davis for being President of the Chamber of Commerce, one of the original Trustees of Stanford University, and a Trustee of the Free Public Library, among other prominent positions. James Lick (1796-1896), another notable local of San Francisco, is briefly mentioned in this announcement. Unfortunately, Davis was also well-known for his staunch anti-Chinese views and was instrumental in the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act. This flyer lauds Davis for directing "all the energies of his intellect and all the force of his political ability ... towards the suppression of Chinese immigration." Davis's platform for the 1899 mayoral election was based on promoting "white organized labor." Davis did not win the election which was won instead by James D. Phelan (1861-1930), the latter of whom had similar anti-Asian views and advocated for banning Chinese and Japanese immigrants. Phelan was Mayor of San Francisco until 1902.. Ephemera.
