About Louis Rubidoux (also, Robidoux or Roubidoux; 1796-1868) and the early history of Southern California. In his preface, author Robert Hornbeck explicitly refers to his book as not being a history although he describes many early historical figures and events in California's history. The following are the chapter titles: "The First California Boomer," "Spanish Colonial Rule," "California Under Spanish and Mexican Rule," "Don Juan Bandini and the Jurupa Grant," "California Becomes an American State," "Louis Roubidoux," "'A Colony for California," "The First Americans Arrive at Riverside," "Discouragements, Failures, Successes," "What Gringos Learned from Greasers," "Early Churches," "The Navel Orange," "1875," "A Change of Ownership," "First Newspapers," "Nothing But Oranges," and "'Floating' a Grant." Louis Rubidoux was an American rancher of French-Canadian descent. He came to California in 1844 and settled in Riverside. There, he opened the area's first grist mill and operated a winery. He also became one of San Bernardino County's first three supervisors. Notably, he purchased Rancho San Jacinto y San Gorgonio from James Santiago Johnson in 1845 and part of Rancho Jurupa from Benjamin Wilson in 1849. Rubidoux was taken as a prisoner of war during the Mexican-American War by army officer Jose Maria Flores in September 1846. He and other prisoners were freed by General Kearny and Commodore Stockton before reaching San Diego. In 1834, Rubidoux married Guadalupe Garcie (1812-1832), one of the members of an old aristocratic New Mexican family. The town of Rubidoux and Mt. Rubidoux in Riverside County are named after him..
