In 1912, it opened its doors as a temporary city hall after much of the city was destroyed from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. After the new San Francisco City Hall was completed in 1916, the temporary city hall was converted into Hotel Whitcomb in 1917. Hotel Whitcomb was named after Adolphus Carter Whitcomb, whose estate owned the hotel. The hotel featured Edwardian architecture and was a high-profile meeting place for celebrities, politicians, and socialites. Over the years, the function of the hotel building changed. During World War II, the hotel property was used as an office building for the Office for Emergency Management, which oversaw the internment of Japanese Americans. In 1963, the property was changed into residential rentals. The building was changed back into Hotel Whitcomb in 2007 and still operates as a hotel under the same name today. Hotel Whitcomb is part of the National Registry of Historic Hotels of America.. Book. Book Condition: Fine. Binding: Soft cover
