A Very Good copy. A speech that was originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on February 15, 1848 by George Smith Houston (1811-1879), an American lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Alabama from 1843-1849 and 1851-1861, the 24th Governor of Alabama from 1874-1878, and a U.S. Senator from Alabama in1879. Houston was a Southern Democrat but a Unionist. He resigned his position as Congressman with the onset of the Civil War but did not actively participate in the war. Houston's speech addresses a recent loan bill requesting $18,500,000 for continued prosecution of the Mexican-American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo had officially ended the war on February 2, 1848, but it is likely that news of the war's ending had not yet reached Congress or they were still treating the war as active. Houston, who was a supporter of President James K. Polk, appears to advocate for this loan bill which was requested by the president. Houston decries the seeming inconsistent views of his colleagues who are against the bill. Houston refers to various financial figures over recent years and also discusses the Tariff of 1842 and the Tariff of 1846, the latter of which repealed the former.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
