Preface excerpt: It may appear somewhat singular, that an editor, who professes he bears no enmity to the Scotts, should be the first to republish what contains so much severity of satire. This seeming paradox will vanish, when w reflect for a moment on the state of Scotland at the period when this pamphlet was written, and compare it with the present. Its antient barbarism can no longer be produced as an argument fo reproach, but on teh contrary, must ever convince the most malevolent, that its present cultivated state sets it far above the reach of prejudice. So well persuaded was mr. Addision of the utility of satire, when properly applied, that he was favorured the world with his opinion on the subject, in the following words: Among the writers of antiquity, says he, there are none who instruct us more openly in the manners of their respective times in which they lived, than those who have employed themselves in satire, under what dress soever it may appeara, as there are no other authors whose province it is to enter so directly into the ways of men, and set their miscarriages in so strong a light. If we look into manners of more remote ages, we discover nature in her simplicity, and the more we come downward towards our own time, may boserve her hiding..... Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
