John Gay was an English poet and dramatist, a friend of both Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. He is best remembered for The Beggar's Opera, which “played for two seasons at Lincoln’s Inn Fields, 1728, and throughout the British Isles, making much sensation.” (Oxford Biography)
