Lukin saw service in the Zulu War of 1879 with the Natal Native Contingent. He was one of the officers to assist in bringing in the body of the Prince Imperial. He was wounded at Ulundi. Major Bengough, his commanding officer, wrote of him, ‘He has distinguished himself from the first day of joining the Battalion by the active and zealous performance of his duties, and I consider him one of the most promising young soldiers who have served with me during the war.’ He also served with the Cape Mounted Riflemen in Basutoland and Bechuanaland and he commanded a flying-column during the Boer War and was commander of South African forces at Delville Wood.
