[One of the first of child's prayers book's in this format (Qrto) and other than a previous small Pop-up book (Dean,1968) and the first Qrto HB (also DEAN,1968 - 'A Child's Book of Prayers') and 'Prayers For Children',(Qrto,DEAN, 1971),and 'Youngster's Prayers' (Qrto,Dean,1972) to follow on,as this title.A subject revisited by the twins several times.] NFINE.Neat dark blue inked familial inscrptn (Aunt+Uncle to neice) to lower,right-hand corner of front free endpaper - almost imperceptible on dark blue background with colour pictorial illustraion. Lower edge to same free endpaper with tiniest of a vertical snick/closed tear in vicinity of that inscrtpn uniformly affecting the concomitant spot of the first 6pp of the book,and no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn.Bright,crisp,clean,generally sharp-cornered,glossy laminated wrap-around cream background with colour pictorial artwork illustration,by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone to back+front boards; a kneeling boy+girl in contemporary/period bedtime pyjamas saying their prayers,with green capitalised lettered title and black lettered publisher name to front,black capitalised lettered cream spine/backstrip,and to rear board a single colour illustration of a boy sat resting his chin in his folded arms resting on his bent knees - with no text/ lettering,respectively.Negligible shelf-wear, bumping,creases to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present.Some minimal,faint superficial scoring/indents to either board,the front hinge's top three sewn stictches to book's signatures are broken/cut,rest of hinge's stitches unaffected - solid and sound,rear hinges sewn stitches intact without any cracking,and both boards minimally concaved.Top+ fore-edges with coloured page edges; contents bright tight,clean,solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - appears unread,other than my own collation.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued, 1st edn,28pp includes free endpapers with 10 double-page and 5 single page,full colour,full page colour artwork illustrations by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone and a single vignette illustration to the multi-colour lettered title page. Described hard but fairly and honestly - probably reads worse than actually is! A collection of some 16 prayers,some with credited author's name. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age and its nature, i.e a child's book,and even internally,the book is also in a more than acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation.It is only the minor interior faults described,that prevents a slightly higher grading.Despite that,it really is an exceptional copy for brightness and cleanliness. Highly collected and prolific children's book illustrators,a scarce and unusual item/ephemera in Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the A & J Grahame Johnstone's canon.
