Robert Joly was killed in Holland on his twenty-first birthday in March 1945.He was
at that time a Lieutenant in the Grenadier
Guards, and these poems were most of them written in the advance through France and Belgium.The earlier ones he wrote while still at school,after Clifton had moved from Bristol to the north coast of Cornwall.They make but a brief chronicle those twenty-one years,and yet they were full to the brim.His was one of those gifted spirits that can follow a bewildering variety of pursuits with success in many and brilliance in some.He was an artist who felt that first of all he must write,but he was also an accomplished painter and musician.At school he had distinguished himself in many athletic sports.He had won a major history scholarship to Peterhouse,and was
already planning for himself an academic career.A vital and complicated person,full
of infectious enthusiasms,he had secured a large circle of friends who valued his friendship.
