Text is still readable. A Very Good copy. A speech originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on January 18, 1848 by John William Jones (1806-1871), an American physician, politician, and medical professor. He served as a U.S. Representative from Georgia from 1847-1849 as a Whig. Jones was also a surgeon for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In this speech, Jones discusses the cause, present state, and future implications of the Mexican-American War. Jones appears to take a relatively neutral stance on the war. After summarizing the war, he expresses his "views upon which [he] conceive[s] to be the best mode of terminating hostilities and securing an honorable and satisfactory peace." He cautions against "waging war for the sake of spoils" and proceeds to list various ancient civilizations that fell, at least in part, due to imperialistic ambitions. It is unclear if Jones had intended to speak further as the last sentence reads, "Here Dr. Jones's hour expired" [Congressmen were limited to speaking for one hour].. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
