Hubert Oliver Jenkins's bookplate tipped in on front pastedown of each volume: "A Memorial Gift, From the Library of Hubert Oliver Jenkins." Each bookplate has a black-and-white printed portrait photograph of Hubert. Original publisher's brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Vols. 1-4 published 1896, 1898, 1898, and 1900, respectively. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4." All pages of all volumes, complete. Vol. I: lx, 1-1240. Vol. II: xxx, 1241-2183. Vol. III: xxiv, 2183-3136. Vol. IV: ci, 3137-3313. 392 black-and-white plates (all located in Vol. IV), complete. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are very clean and intact overall but corners are slightly bumped and there is rubbing on front, back, spine, and extremities. Front inner hinges of Vols. I and IV are somewhat loosened, but binding of each volume is still strong and holding. Very Good copies. A comprehensive, four-volume set about the fishes of North America and Middle America found north of the equator and the Isthmus of Panama. Vols. I and II contain a list of each fish with accompanying information such as the fish's scientific name, appearance, and location. Vol. III contains a "general index, an artificial key to the families, a glossary of scientific terms, and an addendum containing all species overlooked or described subsequent to the publications of the part to which they belong." Vol. IV is mostly plates but also includes addenda such as a continuation of the list of fish species, information relating to Jordan's and Evermann's recent expeditions to Mexico and Puerto Rico, respectively, and changes in nomenclature following research by Dr. Gunther. Among the beautiful and charming illustrations are depictions of sharks, lampreys, rays, eels, flying fish, seahorses, deep sea fish, and a multitude of other types of fish. Authored by David Starr Jordan (1851-1931) and Barton Warren Evermann (1853-1932). In addition to being the founding president of Stanford University, Jordan was an ichthyologist like Evermann. Oliver Peebles Jenkins (1850-1935) was a physiologist, ichthyologist, and histologist. Oliver was a founding faculty member of Stanford University and a close associate of Jordan. Notably, Jordan was Oliver's primary advisor when Oliver did doctoral research for his PhD. Oliver also collected specimens with Jordan and Evermann on scientific expeditions. Hubert Oliver Jenkins (1885-1959) was one of the sons of Oliver Peebles Jenkins.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
