4to. 496, [497] - 944pp, well-Illustrated with numerous photographs on glossy paper, including many portraits, and several steel-engraved portraits on plate paper, three-quarter leather and peppled cloth, raised bands and gilt titles at spines -- please note: the spine titles at volume II were inadvertently printed upside-down, although one cannot tell until the book is opened, and the volume has to be turned right-side up to read -- chocolate marbled pastedowns and endpapers, all edges marbled, light general wear, occasional minor scuffs, leather at corners worn through, DAR bookplates at front pastedowns, gift inscriptions to DAR at front fly, overall a clean, bright set. Please note: the final page of volume II, which is a biographical sketch of one James Lee Rupert, continues mid-sentence to volume III (which is lacking). There are no missing pages. Volume I includes the history, plus Biographical Data, while Volume II includes Biographical Data. Set would shortly be reprinted by the National Historical Association, Inc., Harrisburg, 1936, but this is the very scarce original edition. From the Foreword, "The present work presents in the aggregate an amount and variety of genealogical and personal information and portraiture unequaled by any kindred publication. No similar work has ever before been presented, and it contains a great amount of ancestral history never before printed. The object, clearly defined and well digested, is threefold: First. To present in concise form an outline history of the Juniata Valley. Second. To preserve a record of its prominent present-day people. Third. To present through personal sketches the relation of its prominent families of all times to the growth, singular prosperity and widespread influence of the Juniata Valley, Pennsylvania."
