This is a history of 15th and 16th century explorations and conquests carried out by the Portuguese in the East, written by a Jesuit missionary. The frontispiece depicts a birdseye view of Lisbon harbour, with Portugal’s Indian fleet in the foreground. Plates include maps of Portuguese ports and colonies in the Far East, India and Africa, including Cochin, Malacca, Goa, Aden, and Mozambique. “The title of this work is not very appropriate, as it relates almost entirely to the discoveries and conquests made by the Portuguese in Asia and Africa. It is, however, an esteemed and well-written work� (Sabin).
