Pages are clean and intact overall. Front and back hinges have been reglued. Front free endpaper and back free endpaper are missing. There are pencil scrawls on four blank pages in the front and back, somewhat erased. Covers have slight rubbing, edge and corner wear, and wear at the head and tail of the spine. A Good copy. Autobiography of Colonel John A. Joyce (1842-1915), who served in the Kentucky 24th Infantry of the Union Army during the Civil War. Much of the biography is composed of Joyce's recollections and is historical in nature, but poems written by him are also in the back. Black-and-white illustrations including a photographic frontispiece portrait of the author, complete. Pages and covers are clean and intact overall. Repairs done to corners and tail of spine (gray patches). Covers and spine are darkened and moderately rubbed. Pages have the occasional small stain and pencil annotation. Closed tear on Page 291; text is affected but still readable. Lines scrawled in pencil are on the blank recto of the frontispiece, blank verso of a back decorative illustration, and two blank pages of the back flyleaf. A Good copy. Memoir of John A. Joyce (1842-1915), an Irish-American author and Union soldier. During the Civil War, he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant in the Kentucky 24th Infantry Regiment. Joyce later received the moniker, the "Washington Poet," for his prolific writing career after the war and for being a resident of Washington, D.C. for almost fifty years. In his autobiography, Joyce recounts many different episodes and parts of his life, including his birthplace and ancestry, being committed to an asylum for two months for having hallucinations and "manic" behavior, his personal experiences as a Union soldier, leaving the Army after the war and becoming a school teacher, his time as a law student, and his employment as a tax collector for the Internal Revenue Service. Among the other events Joyce describes are Kentucky in the years leading up to the Civil War; history of the Kentucky 24th Infantry Regiment; the Battle of Shiloh; Brigg's Raid; the Siege of Knoxville; battles in Chattanooga and Atlanta; President Johnson's impeachment; events in California, Oregon, and Washington Territory; and prison reform. Also included are facsimiles of autographed materials from General F. E. Spinner, General Sherman, and President Hayes and a collection of Joyce's poetry.. Book. Book Condition: Good.
