Monterey Hills is a small, diverse, middle-class community within the city of Los Angeles, California located about 4 miles ENE of downtown Los Angeles and about 3 miles from Pasadena off of the 110 Freeway. It is surrounded by El Sereno to the southeast, Hermon to the east, Montecito Heights to the southwest and the independent city of South Pasadena to the northeast. Monterey Hills is part of the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council (ASNC). Monterey Hills is also Los Angeles' easternmost neighborhood. Maxwell Starkman, Los Angeles-based architect who began designing tract homes for the post-World War II Southern California housing boom and capped his career with the Museum of Tolerance and Sony Pictures Plaza, In 1953, Starkman and architect Fritz Reichl formed their own firm, Reichl and Starkman Architects. When Riechl died a few years later, the company changed its name to Maxwell Starkman & Associates and began designing tract homes during Southern California's post-war housing boom. Over the next three decades, Starkman built thousands of single-family homes and apartment complexes, shopping centers, office buildings, luxury condominiums and hotels.
