Diaries of one of the great Empire-builders and administrators that Britain produced. He spent his first three African years in the service of British East Africa Company, and pioneered, warred and made treaties on their behalf in Keya and Buganda. He also led expeditions to the Ruwenzori and Lake Albert, while recruiting the Sudanese soldiers left behind from the Emin Pasha debacle. The diaries give an unrivalled insight into the stunningly rapid advance of British interests into the heart of the continent. In latter years he was involved in a British dash into West Niger in an attempt to forestall French influence spreading.
