"With some exceptions, research in the South West Indian Ocean has been at irregular intervals and uncorrelated. The results of such research have been published in a large number of different publications and there is a significant body of work that has never been published but is available in manuscript form only. Cruise and data reports on oceanographic research cruises in this part of the ocean have been published by the various sponsors of such cruises and are not always easy to locate. All these factors have a decided detrimental effect on the oceanographic research worker's quest for the existing data and research publications pertaining to this part of the ocean. The present work is a direct result of the author's own problems in this regard and stem from the collection which he has built up for his own use. As a result the information contained in this guide is a direct function of the author's own field of interest and the local availability, or lack thereof, of certain publications and data. Where information was not locally available, extensive use was made of certain sources, most of which are mentioned in chapter IV and VII."
