Letter handwritten on beige paper in black ink. Dated Saturday, February 9 (no year, circa 1850s-1870s). 5" x 8." One page. Addressee's name and address are handwritten on the back. Signature is very clean and intact. Letter has a very small hole in the center but is clean and undamaged overall. Samuel F. McCleary, Jr. (1822-1901) was a city clerk of Boston and held the position from 1852-1883 after his father's resignation. His father, Samuel F. McCleary, Sr. (1780-1855), had been the first Boston city clerk from 1822-1852. In this letter, Samuel McCleary, Jr. asks a man named John Bear (or Bean?) to give the bearer, Mr. Davis, a copy of the City Doc., No. 12. Letter is signed, "Samuel F. McCleary, City Clerk.". Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
