Early American imprint. Original publisher's beige paper wrappers. Text printed in black ink. 4 3/4" x 8." Thirty pages. There are two pages missing in the front but it is possible that they are only an endpaper. Main body of text appears complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for splitting and chipping along spine, light age toning throughout, faint offsetting from printed text, and a closed tear at top of title page measuring about 1 1/2." A Very Good copy. This is a sermon that was originally given by Joseph McKeen on May 28, 1800 before the Council, Senate, and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. McKeen speaks on relatively general terms about the recent success and stability of the United States government but also cautions against vices that may follow. He says Christian principles are necessary to maintain a just government. McKeen also acknowledges and pays tribute to Governor Increase Sumner (1746-1799) and Lieutenant Governor Moses Gill (1733-1800) of Massachusetts, both of whom had passed away recently. Joseph McKeen (1757-1807) was an American clergyman and the first president of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. McKeen served in the American Revolutionary War and later became a Congregationalist minister at the First Church in Beverly, Massachusetts in 1785. He served as a minister until 1802 after he became president of Bowdoin College.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
