Compasses hidden in buttons,hollowed-back hairbrushes containing maps and 9-centimetre ridged-back saws, handkerchieves with maps in invisible ink printed on them,chess-men filled with special inks for forging documents, playing cards lined with silk-tissue maps - these and many others were the gadgets that Charles Fraser-Smith produced and supplied to secret agents, partisans and escaping prisoners during the Second World War. Known as 'Q' gadgets after the Great War fighting ships which had been disguised as freighters or unarmed trawlers to fool the enemy, these too were made to out-fox the Germans and save valuable lives. Ostensibly working for the Ministry of Supply,Charles Fraser-Smith was in fact working under the direction of MI6 and MI9,the secret intelligence services, his job being to supply materials on demand for highly secretive and sensitive projects and for personnel stranded or fighting behind enemy lines. Until now he has revealed few details of his highly secretive war,but as more and more wartime experiences are published alluding briefly to the ingenious gadgets for which he was responsible,Charles Fraser-Smith has decided to tell his own story: a story of faith, dedication and duty.It is a tale which will enthral not only those who had occasion to use his gadgets but also those with a taste for ingenuity and adventure.
