James McLevy was probably the most successful detective in Britain in the mid-nineteenth century. He joined the Edinburgh Police Force in 1830 and rapidly earned the fearful respect of the criminals of the day. After thirty years he wrote two volumes of reminiscences in which he described some of the most notable of his three thousand cases. In these stories McLevy's personality emerges strongly through his intimate acquaintance with the Edinburgh underworld and his enlightened attitude towards his "bairns".There is also some suggestion that his example and methods of deduction may have contributed to Conan Doyle's creation of Sherlock Holmes.George Scott-Moncrieff was an enthusiastic admirer of McLevy's stories, and made this selection shortly before his death in 1974.
