The following is an excerpt: "During the past three centuries there has been waged a vigorous battle over the question as to who was the inventor of printing with movable types. At one time or another almost every country has had some contender for the honor of this invention, which exerted so great an influence on cultural history, but the strife has now narrowed to two contestants: Lourens [Laurens] Janzoon [Janszoon] Coster, who is claimed to have invented printing at Haarlem, Holland, sometime in the vicinity of 1430, and Johann [Johannes] Gutenberg who, it is held by many advocates, discovered the art either at Strassburg [Strausbourg] or Mainz during the decade of 1440 to 1450." Douglas C. McMurtrie (1888-1944) was an American typeface designer, graphic designer, and historian and bibliographer of printing. Harry "Ward" Ritchie (1905-1996) was an American printer, book designer, book collector and author associated with the heyday of fine printing in Southern California during the 1920s-1930s. With Jacob "Jake" Zeitlin, Ritchie co-founded the Rounce & Coffin Club, a less formal alternative to the Zamorano Club, and his own printing press, the Ward Ritchie Press. Through the Ward Ritchie Press, Ritchie published thousands of books, about 750 of which he designed himself.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
