The diary is full of the details of daily farming life in rural Alabama, 1931. Written by Mrs. Shelton Griffin, [we never learn the author's first name] she and her husband, Shelton have a baby who is not identified by name either. They live on a farm near Bakerhill, in south central Alabama. Her daily entries are brief, noting a constant list of on-going tasks and responsibilities: We killed one hog this a.m. [Jan 7] Maude and I quilted. Edgar cleaned up the fence row and ditch [Jan 22] ... made five straw brooms [Jan 27] Finished the quilt a.m. Swept yard planted tomato seeds and garden peas [Feb 20] There are daily references for most of August about picking cotton: picked cotton all day [Aug 21] picked 130 pounds of cotton. Shelton hauled 3 bales to the gins [Aug 25] Following cotton, she helped bring in another uniquely southern crop - peanuts. The crops were sold in Dotham, Alabama. Money was not plentiful and certainly rural America was devastated by the Depression but throughout her diary, she makes no overt reference to hardships or difficulties. This is the simple recounting of a woman working with her husband and family to help maintain the family farm life during a very difficult period. There are extensive references to family, friends and neighbours. This would be an excellent resource for a local historian as one could cross-reference numerous families. This diary paints a very good picture of life in the rural south during the depression, especially from a woman's perspective. It is a very good resource for a historian researching the role and life of women during this period. The diary is in good condition, measuring 5 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches and has 104 dated pages and a large number of information/almanac pages. The diary is 100% complete.
