ISBN No ISBN.

UK,slim 12mo p/back,1st edn.[Originally and first published as UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,Constable & Co Ltd,(London),1927.This the first UK,12mo p/back,1st edn appearance and among the first 25 titles (No. 8),all published in 1947,of the PAN numbered series of 1 - 225,published between 1947-1952.In 1947 PAN solved the problem of post-war paper shortages,by having an agreement with the Board of Trade which allowed them to print the books in Europe, until 1950 when they reverted back to printing in the UK.The book was printed in France by Imprimarie Paul Dupont,PARIS.] VG+.No owner inscrptn, and unpriced - as issued.Bright, clean colour pictorial artwork (non-credited), illustrated front card cover with white lettering,a flat but glue(?) wrinkling/ shrinking red coloured spine with NO discernible reading creases - also with white letters, rear cover with black lettered book's blurb and a potted biog of author to red background; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears.A 1cm split to foot of spine's rear facing edge/ fold - not quite the full height of the Pan logo situated there; probably due to slight bumping evidenced by presence of creases/wrinkles in that vicinity. All edges aged/toned - as usual/normal - book over 70 years old; contents tight and solid, text body bright, clear and clean.but page- edge toning present, but no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners other than the concomitant slight curling from the small and faint, front, lower corner crease to cover.Appears unread, apart from my own collation.UK,slim 12mo p/back,1st edn,v-vipp+9-192pp [paginated] includes contents list/table and author's note to its reverse,9 potted biography of acquaintances and others the author met or knew,up to mid/late 1920's; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, and the 9 individual's named, individual separator pages. Described hard but fairly and honestly, owing to age and scarcity. Ostensibly a series of portraits in prose, the book accompanies him from school and Oxford, along his early career as a young diplomat in the golden age of three decades ago; but while he appears as the narrator of each episode and introduces many well-known people by name, other figures are largely fictional. The settings range from England and France to Turkey and the Middle East. The subjects of his nine character-studies include Miss Plimsoll the governess,J.D. Marstock the perpetual schoolboy,Professor Malone the 'know-all' foreign correspondent,"Titty" the diplomatic failure,Miriam Codd the American globe-trotter,and Arketall, the tipsy,bowler-hatted valet who accompanied Lord Curzon to an international Conference at Lausanne. All are deliciously portrayed with fine balance and sharp-edged humour. Short stories mostly of diplomatic life, considered Nicolson's finest work, the story based on Firbank (Lambert Orme) being particularly memorable. An important and EARLY,scarce title for addition to any PAN books enthusiast's/ collector's shelf, and especially for a newcomer to the genre.[** N.B. includes a contemporaneous(?) private/personal(?) addition of decorative design paper protective cover, assumed from the period of publication - unsure if from publisher; as lacking any text,so no mention of the book, price, nor publisher. This wrapper has no doubt protected the p/b in it's lifetime thus far?] Please contact seller, because of the lighter weight and the value of this item for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas customers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! ** N.B. US customers please be aware: US standard AIR postage from UK to US can now cost more than the price of the book! If speed is not of the essence, then Economy rate is recommended - at approx. 1/2 to 2/3rds of standard US AIR quote/rate - sometimes arriving long before the quoted 42 days - but not always.
