Oxford College was founded in Oxford, Ohio and underwent a series of mergers and name changes over the years. The story of Oxford College begins with its founding in 1830 by Bethania Crocker. The college was chartered in 1839 as the Oxford Female Academy and then again in 1849 as the Oxford Female Institute. A few years later, the Oxford Female College was founded in 1852. The Oxford Female Institute then merged with the Oxford Female College in 1867 and the name of the ensuing institution was simplified as "Oxford College" in 1890. Oxford College was re-chartered as the Oxford College for Women in 1906. However, financial troubles led to the college's closure in 1928. That same year, Oxford College merged with Miami University (also of Oxford, Ohio). The original building of the Oxford Female College was eventually demolished, but the original Oxford Female Institute building still stands to this day as the Oxford Community Arts Center.. Book.
