OXFORDSHIRE: Rapin de Thoyras, Paul: : Blenheim House. Built at the Expence of the Publick and Settled on the Duke of Marlborough and his Posterity

Copper engraving, 24.5 x 40.5 cms, engraved by T. Mynde for Tindall’s continuation of Rapin’s History, black and white as issued, blank verso. Depicting the Great Court of Blenheim Palace, designed by Vanbrugh in the English baroque style. Construction began in 1705, the year following Marlborough’s great victory at Blenheim, but was only completed in the 1720s after years of political intrique and acrimonious squabbles over finances (only part of the costs were met by the public purse). It remains home to the Spencer-Churchill family.
