A reprint of the 'Popular Edition', with 22 illustrations including a tissue-protected frontispiece, and two folding maps. 8vo. xviii, 416pp + xxxii publisher's catalogue dated June 1898. Burgandy cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine with a series of blind-stamped ruled to the upper and lower margins of both boards. Top edge dust soiled and with a trace of wear to the corner tips, and some bruising to the backstrip ends. Former owner name inkstamped to a blank preliminary. Quite a nice, bright copy. A personal account of Rudolf Slatin's service in Sudan, including a detailed narrative of the Battle of Shaykan (1883), after which he was captured and held for eleven years before finally escaping.
