Two of the plates are in color, one of which is the frontispiece. Fourteen of the plates are listed as photogravures. The Figures are in black-and-white. Index in back. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for age toning. Covers are very clean and intact except for several faint smudges on front and back, slight wear to head and tail of spine, and moderate wear to the corners (cloth on corners rubbed off to show interior boards). Binding is tight. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. John Ruskin (1819-1900) was an English author, philosopher, and art critic. This is a collection of his essays about cottages and villas in England, France, Italy, and Switzerland. Excerpt from Prefatory Notes: "The essays are in two parts: the first describing the cottages of England, France, Switzerland, and Italy, and giving hints and directions for picturesque cottage-building. The second part treats of the villas of Italy and England--with special reference to Como and Windermere; and concludes with a discussion of the laws of artistic composition, and practical suggestions of interest to the builders of country-houses."
