Russell is quite candid about his upbringing and the rampant racial discrimination he faced in his life. Bill Russell (1934-2022) was a NBA basketball player and coach. He played center for the Boston Celtics from 1956-1969. He was pioneer in the sport of basketball during a time when there were very few African-American players in the NBA. Russell was renowned for his skills at defense and shot-blocking. In 1966, Russell became the first African-American head coach in the NBA after Celtics head coach Red Auerbach retired. Russell was then both a player and coach for the Celtics until 1969. He had a long and successful career and remains the only player in NBA history to have his jersey number (#6) retired throughout the league. Taylor Branch (b. 1947) is an American author and historian. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his trilogy chronicling the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement, American in the King Years (2006). The following is an excerpt from Page 54 of this memoir (Russell writes of his teenage years): "I was still aimless, but one crucial factor had changed: Whatever happened to me, I realized, I would still know that I was not fundamentally flawed. And if I knew that, what other people thought didn't matter. Most of them were probably attacking me because of some failing that they saw in themselves.
