Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, London, 1851

A very good uncut unopened copy, rebound second quarter 20th Century in 1/4 pale purple cloth, brown paper boards, the title portion of the original spine mounted as a title label. A second volume, covering Meteorological Observations, was issued in 1880. Of the utmost rarity, SABib records only one copy. This copy presented to John Tyndall by the British Government. John Tyndall FRS (2 August 1820 – 4 December 1893) was a prominent 19th century physicist. His initial scientific fame arose in the 1850s from his study of diamagnetism. Later he studied thermal radiation, and produced a number of discoveries about processes in the atmosphere. Tyndall published seventeen books, which brought state-of-the- art 19th century experimental physics to a wider audience. From 1853 to 1887 he was professor of physics at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, where he became the successor to positions held by Michael Faraday. The first systematic observations in South Africa resulted from the establishment, in 1841, of a worldwide network of observation stations. One of these stations was built in the grounds of the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope [2], with the Royal Artillery detachment responsible for all measurements. After the magnetic observatory was destroyed by fire in 1852, a period of 80 years elapsed before a magnetic observatory worthy of name was again established in South Africa.
