This is a copy of the original bylaws established for stockholders of the Rincon Toll Road Company based in Santa Barbara, California. The bylaws address topics such as regular meetings, special meetings, election of directors and officers, and vacancies. This document has been signed by notary public John P. Haese. The document has also been signed by (or on behalf of) the company's stockholders, Samuel P. Calef, Joel Remington Fithian, Harold J. Doulton, Francis J. Underhill, Edward P. Ripley, and Herbert L. Smith, on Page 11 (these signatures are dated April 11, 1910). This document is a unique piece of history pertaining to the Rincon Toll Road Company of Santa Barbara. The Rincon Toll Road Company was incorporated in 1910 in Santa Barbara for the express purpose of constructing a private road on the Rincon stretch in Ventura County to facilitate travel between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. The Rincon stretch could be treacherous or even impassable at times given that it was on the coastal hillside. The Rincon Toll Road Company had proposed construction of a macadam road at a cost of $200,000. However, the company's proposal was dismissed over rights of way disputes and the lack of support from Ventura County supervisors. In 1911, the Rincon Toll Road Company's road campaign was overtaken by another proposal by the State Highway Commission, the latter of which cost $50,000 and was mostly paid for by public subscriptions. The Commission's proposal gained traction and accepted as a solution to traversing the high-tide beach areas of the Rincon stretch. Three raised wooden causeways were then constructed over Rincon's high-tide areas. The Rincon causeways were eventually replaced by the construction of paved road in 1924.. Ephemera.
