The Dorsey brothers were great musicians but they fought like - well, like Irishmen. Didn't they? Not really. It was a more complex relationship. They had their spats, yes. Regularly. But the quarrels were just one thread in the tapestry. They depended on each other almost as if they were twins. In a way, they almost lived for each other. Herb Sanford unravels this relationship in a biography he is uniquely qualified to write.Mr Sanford got to know the Dorseys in 1925,soon became their good friend. They clubbed around together in the Twenties, broke into bigtime radio in the early Thirties: the Dorseys as key sidemen in the studio orchestras,Sanford as a budding director-producer.When Raleigh-Kool sponsored Tommy's booming band on a network show in 1937,Sanford was there to put it together. He literally lived with Tommy and the band for three years. This is the first biography of the fabulous Dorseys - and something more.It is the portrait of a great era - in American music,in American life.Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey came on the music scene just when the big bands were taking on the shape that would define the music of a whole generation. They won their spurs with the California Ramblers,Paul Whiteman, Jean Goldkette and Red Nicols. Then,at just the right moment, they assumed leadership, and helped to give us the Big Band Era. In an age of musical giants,Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey commanded the peaks. They welded jazz and popular music, and gave distinction to both. They put a galaxy of stars into orbit: Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Helen O'Connell, Bunny Berigan, Buddy de Franco, Sy Oliver, Bob Eberly, Buddy Rich, Jo Stafford - the list goes on and on,and you meet them all in these pages.Other great ones helped the Dorseys: Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Paull Whiteman, Hoagy Carmichael. They're here too. In the twilight of the Big Band Era,the stars began to flicker,Glenn Miller went first. Then the others: Artie Shaw, Paul Whiteman, Jimmie Lunceford, Claude Thornhill, Sammy Kaye, Glen Gray, Cab Calloway, Charlie Barnet, Eddy Duchin, Gene Krupa - some retired, some dead.Tommy and Jimmy held out longer than most. When they went,an era died with them. Seldom does a biographer bring to his subject the background of Herb Sanford: writer, musician, advertising executive, producer first in radio, then in television.Even more rarely do so many talents all contribute their dimension to a biography. When Herb Sanford wrote and produced the annual music for Princeton's famous Triangle Club in 1927,it foreshadowed his career. In the early days of radio he directed programmes featuring leading musical figures like composer-conductor Victor Young.Later,as producer-director-writer at BBD&O,he handled Tommy Dorsey's radio programme in the late Thirties. He joined another top ad agency,N. W. Ayer,in the Forties and managed its Hollywood office late into that decade.Mr Sanford joined CBS Television in 1950 and produced the daily Garry Moore Show for eight years.
