Dick Deadeye,or Duty Done is a 1975 British animated film musical, based on the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. The comically convoluted plot is a pastiche of the operas in the Gilbert & Sullivan canon, particularly Trial by Jury, The Sorcerer, H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, Iolanthe and The Mikado, in which the principal character,Able Seaman Dick Deadeye,is sent by Queen Victoria on a quest to recover the stolen 'Ultimate Secret' from the Sorcerer. The film's release was accompanied by the original release of a deluxe-jacketed LP soundtrack recording and this richly illustrated and colourful storybook by Jeremy Hornsby, with profuse colourful Searle-inspired art. The Ultimate Secret has been stolen. The trouble is that it's so secret no one (not even the Modern Major General) knows what it is. Obviously it has to be got back and it takes all Dick Deadeye's artful guile to ultimately retrieve it It's been a century since Gilbert & Sullivan fist dazzled audiences with their satirical musical wit.Now Ronald Searle has brought new life to their immortal characters Little Buttercup,Nanki-Poo,the pirates, the Captain of the Pinafore, the Judge, the Sorcerer and many others in this delightful tale based on the full-length animated feature film 'Dick Deadeye'. Jeremy Hornsby has given this book a text which heroically guides the eye through a series of chases, escapes and escapades.Gilbert & Sullivan, who so merrily and mercilessly rocked late Victorian England, would relish the delightful discovery,in this gallimaufry of enjoyments,of how little has changed in the antics of pulic personalities since their day. Designed by Derek Birdsall, this is a book not only for youngsters and Gilbert & Sullivan devotees, but for everyone who relishes a gentle upstaging of our own public and private attitudes today. Ronald William Fordham Searle (b. March 3,1920 - d. Dec 30,2011.) He was an English artist and satirical cartoonist, comics artist, sculptor, medal designer and illustrator. He is best remembered as the creator of St Trinian's School and for his collaboration with Geoffrey Willans on the 'Molesworth' series. Works as Ronald Searle.Born in Cambridge. Studied at Cambridge School of Art (1936-39). Served in the Army during WW2 and was interned in Japanese PoW camps in Siam and Malaysia for three and a half years. On his release,he settled in London and began working as a humorous illustrator and carciaturist for books and magazines, including 'Punch' and 'Lilliput'.In 1959,at the invitation of the United Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees,he visited camps in Austria,Italy and Greece, and published a book illustrating his impressions. The following year he settled in France, where he lived until his death. Searle has illustrated over 60 books.'Hurrah for St. Trinian's!' (1948) was among the first of many giving a mock-horrific view of private schools and their denizens; in these and many of his other books, the predominant mood of effervescent humour is offset by sinister or macabre overtones. He early developed a fanciful and strikingly individual graphic manner, subjecting the human form to grotesque distortions (bristling brows, hunched shoulders, matchstick legs and stiletto feet) and by the mid 1950s had become virtually a household name in Britain. He succeeds both at character-invention (favouring a number of well-defined types) and at caricature. He is also a painter in watercolour and gouache, etcher and lithographer and has worked on several films including Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965).
