Siue Quod in Sapientem non cadit iniuria [The Constancy of the Sage. That the Wise does not fall Under Injury]. -- Bound With: M. ANNÆI SENECAE RHETORIS SUASORIAE, CONTROUERSIAE; & DECLAMATOINUM EXCERPTA. Seneca, M. Annaei. 1619. Amsterdam, apud Ioannem Ianssonium [Ianssonivm]. 320 pages. Title translates to English as, “Excerpted Passages and Controversy from the Persuasive Rhetorician. ” Also known as “Seneca the Younger, ” L. Annaeus Seneca was a Stoic philosopher and adviser to Nero. He blames the Sabbath for encouraging indolence among the Jews, a criticism echoed by many subsequent Latin authors. Seneca gives evidence that at the time there was widespread sympathy for, and acceptance of, Jewish customs (an acceptance of which he heartily disapproves) . –EJ, 2007.
