Little has been written about the Royal Flying Corps in Palestine during the Great War campaigns of 1916-18 that ended with the destruction of three Turkish armies - the war's most complete victory. This is the compelling story of an RFC pilot set in the context of these campaigns.Told by his son,a well-known historian,it recaptures the thrills and the dangers of the pioneering age of air combat. Although there were plenty of dogfights, the conditions in which the airmen flew - especially in the Sinai Desert - were often very unlike those on the Western Front.A forced landing could mean an agonising death from thirst, while warfare was much more mobile and pilots sometimes found themselves flying at the head of cavalry charges taking place below them.As in Flanders, however, all aviators flew without parachutes, sharing the same secret terror of going down in flames. The pilot around whom this book revolves survived being shot down (and an epic trek across the desert through the Turkish lines) besides five other major crashes, but his experiences were so traumatic that years later he suffered a total collapse from which he never fully recovered. 'Wings over the Desert' investigates the relationship between the RFC and T. E. Lawrence, and also the strange code of chivalry that grew up between British and German fliers. Many of its illustrations come from a cache of unpublished photographs, and of negatives that have remained unprinted for over 90 years.
