Evert Visscher, Boekverkooper, in de Dirk van Hasselt steeg, T'Amsterdam, 1727

Complete. In Dutch and English. A fresh-feeling, lovely copy that is astoundingly welcoming despite its age. Heavy, clubbable, agreeable condition. Full leather with gilt stamped decoration and titling (genial and worn). The boards are worn, rubbed, scuffed all about. Five shallow ridges on the spine. The spine is healthy with some mild wear. The book has, at some stage, been rebound. The end papers are new. The red papertrims are benign and mild-mannered. The etched illustrations are elegant and most pleasing. The pages are comfortable, very healthy, clean, clear, assured, more than satisfactory, more than competent, gracious and generous. fk. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. de Weduwee van Steven Swart, t'Amsterdam, 1708

680 pages of Dictionary and 92 pages of Grammar (complete). In English and Dutch with dedication in Latin. Second edition of the Quaker Sewel's excellent English-Dutch dictionary. Sewel had worked with the Amsterdam publisher, Steven Swart, regularly. Swart, an Anglophile, published many of Sewel's translations and prose. When Swart died his widow picked up the business and continued the loyal association with William Sewel. The dictionary was originally published in 1691 and this second edition is marked by the inclusion of a poem/ ode at the end: "To fill up an empty page or two, the following, tho not properly belonging to this Dictionary, yet being a piece of Philology, hath been added." It is here that he surprises the reader: ". since I know too well that I, who was never in England but onely a matter of matter of ten months, and that about fourty years ago, am noways qualified to write a perfect English Poem, and in that language to soar on the wings of lofty and sublime expressions, as perhaps I might have done ." In fact he did extraordinarily well! The grammar pages are much engaging and fascinating, giving a clear, distinct flavour of expression, spelling, sound and spoken format at the time of William and Mary, in both English and Dutch. This is a MOST pleasing copy. It has been rebound, a little enthusiastically. The bottom of the pages have been neatly, if thoughtlessly, over-trimmed. However, other than the title page the text is unaffected. Bound in quarter leather. Claret boards; these are neat, sound and healthy. The leather corners and spine are tidy and sure of themselves. The gilt titling on the spine is fresh. The contents are really most agreeable. Despite expected age-related spots and wear here and there, the pages are in very good condition throughout. They are very clear, comfortable, clean, tidy, smart. They are very easy to use and read (for resource or enjoyment!). They are genial and proud, placid and gentlemanly. fk.
