The Folio Society prides itself on producing series of an author's works which regular publishers might not think economic - in several cases it is only possible to acquire forgotten books by major writers in Folio Society editions. In 1949 they produced a fine edition and this first title of R(obert) S(mith) Surtees. This was followed shortly after by his most popular novel,'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour' with John Leech's original engravings. So successful, delighted readers asked for more of his novels (most of which had been out-of-print for years) to be issued.Over the next few years 'Handley Cross', 'Mr Facey Romford's Hounds', 'Plain or Ringlets','Ask Mamma','Hawbuck Grange' and 'Hillingdon Hall' were added. All were of uniform binding, colour and design. This title is the first in the series.See also rja1741.
