When his father died, Hugh and his beloved dog Argos had to go to live with his Aunt Alison, who did not like either boys or dogs. When she threatened Argos, Hugh ran away. Hoping to get to the University at Oxford, as his father had done before him, instead he fell in with a band of wandering players and had a year of adventure, travel and learning before finding a new home.
